Birla Institute of Scientific reasearch having its headquarter at Kolkata, established in 1964 under companies societies registration act . Its bhimtal centre came into existance since 1974.

The major activities undertaken:

• Establishment of Sciemce and Technology enterprenuer development park in 1984

• Establishment of Labs and Production of aeromatic and medicinal plants

• Community based fruit plantation

• Community Sanitation program in villages and urban areas

• Plantation of salix in the vally of Kumaon along the water stream to protect the soil erosion

• Tea Plantation

• Food Procesing Unit

• Kiwi Fruit and Olive plantation 

• Development of Oak Nursury for planting Oak around the vicinity of Nainital Distrct, to make the region environment friendly

• Uttaranchal Mobile Hospital and Research Centre
